Livonia Early Childhood Center: Where Design Supports Learning
The Livonia Public School District has launched a new Early Childhood Center as part of an initiative to modernize its educational facilities. This 72,000-square-foot Center is designed to support the development of over 700 children through sensory play. The facility combines new construction with a renovated section of a former junior high school. It features 29 classrooms and over 60,000 square feet of outdoor play space. The Center is thoughtfully designed to encourage exploration and engagement among young learners.
A Creative Canvas for Young Minds
To support the school’s mission of sensory learning, TMP Architecture specified Polyvision’s digitally printed CeramicSteel surfaces for classroom and communal areas. Building on a previous successful project, the design team chose this durable material to bring interactive, creative expression to life by incorporating Charley Harper’s whimsical “Beguiled by the Wild” graphic in a large-format installation. Designed like a giant coloring book, the walls invite children to engage with the artwork directly, supporting the development of fine motor skills and creativity.
Beyond design and durability, the Center’s choice of CeramicSteel also supports a healthier, more sustainable learning environment. The surface is non-porous, easy to disinfect, and inherently resistant to microbes. CeramicSteel contributes to long-term success with no VOC emissions and Cradle-to-Cradle Bronze and Indoor Advantage Gold certifications.
